It runs on locks from other makers, so an owner can keep the hardware already on the doors or pick a lock per building, and manage codes, schedules, and residents from one portal. LockState is the other name it carries in our database. It is a ButterflyMX partner, which puts it at the unit door while ButterflyMX handles the lobby, and it is the lock-agnostic option in our [multifamily access control guide](/property-management-software/multifamily-access-control/). The facts panel below is rendered from our vendor database with a source URL and verification date on each entry. ## Who it fits and who it does not RemoteLock lists small multifamily and single-family rental. The buyer in the research notes is rehabbing a six-unit and wants smart locks on the common door and the units so they stop managing keys and can give separate codes to maintenance, cleaners, and showings. The second buyer has a quadplex, wants keyless so they stop replacing locks at turnover, and might run it as a short-term rental later. Both are on the [small multifamily page](/property-management-software/multifamily-access-control/for-small-multifamily/), and the research notes list short-term rental in its segments too. It does not list institutional multifamily, student housing, or commercial facilities. An operator with 5,000 doors who wants a hub, thermostats, and self-guided tours from one vendor is a SmartRent or PointCentral conversation. An operator whose problem is the gate is a Gatewise conversation. ## Pricing Pricing is not published. Ask for the per-door monthly software figure and the minimum, and ask it separately from the lock cost, since the locks come from someone else. Ask whether the price changes by lock brand. Ask whether the contract is month-to-month or annual; for a six-unit owner that matters more than the per-door rate. ## Integrations The confirmed PMS list is AppFolio, Yardi, RealPage, and Rent Manager, per RemoteLock’s own integrations article. Buildium is recorded in the research notes as a feature request, which is the honest phrasing, so if you run Buildium ask whether it has shipped before signing. Entrata, ResMan, Propertyware, and MRI are not on the list. Ask what syncs, in which direction, and whether it is real time or scheduled. For a small building the sync that matters is the move-out. Ask whether the code dies when the lease ends in the PMS or when someone remembers. ## Limitations and questions to ask Ask which locks. Lock-agnostic means the lock is your decision and your risk, so ask for the supported list, which models RemoteLock recommends at your door count, and what happens to support when a lock maker changes firmware. The research notes record Lockly locks connecting through RemoteLock, as one example of the pairing. Ask how the locks connect. RemoteLock’s own article on Wi-Fi versus Z-Wave is the research source for Wi-Fi failing at scale in garden-style layouts, so ask what they recommend for your building and whether a hub is required. Ask about batteries, the top operational complaint in the category, and what still works during an outage. Ask how a resident without a smartphone gets in. Washington’s ESSB 5937 requires a non-app key on request from January 2027, and New York has already seen litigation after a landlord blocked a key cylinder. Ask whether a keypad code satisfies that in your state and whether the locks on the quote keep a physical cylinder.
