Akuvox makes smart video intercoms, indoor monitors and access control devices, and sells them with SmartPlus, a resident app and cloud portal for apartment buildings. In the app a tenant sees who is at the entrance before answering, talks to the visitor on live video, opens the door with a button or Bluetooth, issues time-limited QR keys and guest PINs, and reviews date-stamped photos of door releases. Residents without smartphones can still answer and unlock through a standard phone call. Property access works by app, face recognition, Bluetooth, NFC, QR code, PIN or RFID card. For older buildings Akuvox has a separate 2-wire residential line, which it describes as a way to upgrade outdated intercoms over the existing infrastructure. In the multifamily access control guide Akuvox is one of the intercom makers, and the facts panel below is rendered from our vendor database with a source and verification date on each entry.
Who it fits
The database tags institutional multifamily. Akuvox’s own solution pages cover residential, residential 2-wire, smart security, commercial, assisted care and hospitals, and public spaces, and SmartPlus has residential and commercial versions. The residential pitch is addressed to property managers “upgrading your apartment buildings,” and its installation gallery runs from New York to Stockholm to Hong Kong.
The clearest fit is an older apartment building with a working but dated intercom on two-wire cabling. Rewiring a building for IP is the expensive part of an intercom upgrade, and the 2-wire kits are built to skip it. A new building that wants one brand for the entrance panel, the in-unit monitor and the app is the other fit.
It fits less well for an operator who wants the intercom, unit locks and amenity doors run from one platform with credentials issued from the lease. Akuvox documents a lease-driven sync for one PMS, Rent Manager, and only on its Ucloud platform, so operators on other systems should expect manual resident management.
Pricing
Pricing is not published. The SmartPlus site routes buyers to a Get a Quote form, and Akuvox sells through certified partners and authorized online resellers. Ask the installer for the door station, indoor monitor and access reader prices by model, and the installation cost, with the 2-wire option priced against a full IP rewire if your building qualifies. Ask whether SmartPlus is billed per apartment, per device or per site, whether residents or the property pay for app calling, and what the renewal term is. Ask which features stay free if the cloud subscription lapses.
Integrations
Akuvox documents one PMS integration, Rent Manager, and its knowledge base says it only supports the SmartPlus Ucloud platform. Tenants added in Rent Manager sync to SmartPlus Cloud, and the property chooses whether the SmartPlus account is created at move-in or lease start and deleted at move-out or lease end. Activation is requested from inside Rent Manager, and Akuvox says its team follows up within 24 hours. Beyond that, Akuvox’s technology partners page lists home automation, security and telephony vendors (Amazon Alexa, Snap One, Fibaro, Genetec, RingCentral among them), and the SmartPlus site says it integrates with on-premise building security, home automation and access control systems.
Ask the direct question: how does a new resident get into SmartPlus, and how is a former resident removed? If the answer is a manual entry in the web portal, ask who on your team owns it and how fast it happens at move-out. If you run Rent Manager, ask whether your SmartPlus account is on Ucloud, and have the installer show a test move-out removing access end to end.
Limitations and questions to ask
Ask what still works when the building’s internet drops, which unlock methods are local to the device and which need the cloud. Ask where SmartPlus data is hosted for US properties and what the service level agreement covers; Akuvox publishes one on the SmartPlus site, so read it before signing. Ask about face recognition: how the templates are stored, who can enrol a face, and whether your state or city restricts biometric entry in housing. Ask who services the hardware locally and what the warranty and RMA process look like. On the 2-wire kits, ask which legacy systems they work with and whether the existing in-unit stations have to be replaced.
Alternatives
The multifamily access control vendor list puts every vendor in the category side by side. 2N, part of the Axis group, is the closest comparison, an intercom maker that publishes its per-apartment cloud calling prices. Aiphone is the hardware brand whose IXG Series serves apartments alongside commercial buildings. ButterflyMX is the cloud intercom that became a full access platform, with five PMS integrations. The ButterflyMX alternatives comparison covers the rest.
